Perryville is a located in Goodyear, a western suburb of the Phoenix metro area, and is home to the Perryville Prison Complex operated by the Arizona Department of Corrections. Perryville is one of Goodyear’s largest employers.

Long before Perryville was a prison complex, it was the home to the first NHRA National Championship Drag Races that came to Arizona in 1955. According the NHRA, “the championship was decided at the Perryville Drag Strip, a 4,000 foot long airport runway near Goodyear on November 19-20, 1955. The first ever NHRA National Champion was Californian Calvin Rice. Rice's J. E. Riley & Sons flathead Mercury powered dragster turned in a winning time of 10.30 seconds at 141.95MPH.” Perryville although, not the NHRA’s first choice, it was only held there because they were rained out in Kansas City, proved to be a great location, and drew fans from as far away as Los Angeles.

After Perryville’s drag strip days, it was simply part of the expansive desert landscape that was relatively uninhabited. In 1981 the Arizona Department of Corrections opened three units of the Perryville Complex. Those employed by the Perryville Complex can find a variety of home choices in Goodyear.
