February 27, 1892, is the officially recognized date of birth for the Glendale, home of the Arizona Cardinals and the Phoenix Coyotes. The University of Phoenix Stadium, located next to the jobbing.com Arena which is home to the Phoenix Coyotes, is an architectural marvel named one of the ten most of the impressive sports facilities on the Globe by Business Week. It is the only American facility to make the list. Tailgating at the stadium is fast becoming a fan favorite activity.
Happy campers grilling their favorite meats beneath the awnings of their fully equipped RVs, while dressed in crazy Cardinal gear enjoying one of the valley's 340 sunny days, in the company of other like minded football fans. Could anything be better? Not in the minds of many a Glendale resident, who fought hard to win the right to be the home of the Arizona Cardinals. Out of town attendees to Superbowl XLII, were in awe of the stadium and surrounding facilities and remarked repeatedly how Glendale residents were so accommodating and appreciative of their presence.
If football is not your game, Glendale is also the spring training home of the Chicago White Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The City of the Glendale built Camelback Ranch just for them. Spring training brings thousands of winter visitors each year, many of them “spring training widows” so Glendale also provides great shopping for them, as it also Arizona's Antique Capital.
Spring Training widows, in case you don’t know, are the wives of retirees who flock here for the more personalized preseason activities associated with spring training. For those who have never had the pleasure of partaking in spring training, it is an opportunity to meet players, see up and coming players in their career infancy, and enjoy a camaraderie with other die-hard fans in a more relaxed atmosphere.
Moderately priced Glendale is a great community in which to raise a family, with its diverse mix of clean well maintained neighborhoods of traditional brick homes on over-sized lots with horses grazing in the front to newer master-planned neighborhoods with stucco finished homes and park-like common areas.
Glendale has numerous parks throughout the community. Saguaro Ranch Park, the Showpiece of the Valley, is a family favorite and is one Glendale's oldest and most magnificent. The park still maintains 13 of the original building and the grounds are an incredible testament to Glendale's heritage. The lush grounds feature citrus, fig, date palm, olive, apricot, peach, and pecans trees, as well as rose gardens, a grape vineyard and brightly colored peacocks freely roaming about.
On any of the spring or summer holidays, you will enjoy the mouthwatering smells of ribs, burgers, hot dogs and steaks cooking over aromatic mesquite coals, as families gather and picnic in the park. Chattering quails, bill clacking roadrunners and cooing doves all compliment the laughter filling the air, carried along by the soft breezes, that are typical of spring and summer days in Arizona.
Glendale also offers great schools, and a variety of higher education institutions including Glendale Community College, Midwestern the first medical school in the valley, and the prestigious Thunderbird School of Global Business. Speaking of business, Glendale is one select valley cities where the majority of its residents actually work in their own city, making commute time minimal when compared to average commute times of residents in large thriving a large thriving metropolis. Glendale is also home to numerous hospitals and medical offices that provide every health related service needed to serve its growing population.
